Hair loss: For longer, thicker, and faster growing hair.

Easy everyday tips for thicker looking, longer hair.

Here is a short list of suggestions that I find (in my experience with patients and with myself) actually works, and is practical and safe.

1. Biotin, high dose; 10,000 micrograms (or 10 milligrams) 1-2 times a day.   Costs ~ $6 a bottle at Walmart.  You will first notice your nails growing faster and not breaking as easily.  Later you will notice your hair needs to be cut more frequently and some color may come back if you have gray hair. This tip works even better if you suffer from dry itchy scalp or have a scaling, red rash around your nose and mouth.  This did work for me and most of my patients who stick with it for 4 months.

…Quoted from WebMD – “There isn’t a good laboratory test for detecting biotin deficiency, so this condition is usually identified by its symptoms, which include thinning of the hair (frequently with loss of hair color) and red scaly rash around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Nervous system symptoms include depression, exhaustion, hallucinations, and tingling of the arms and legs. There is some evidence that diabetes could result in biotin deficiency.”

2.  Vitamin D3, 5,000 a day.  Most people are deficient or have low levels.

3.  N-Acetyl-L-cysteine, 500 mg twice a day.  NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) is well known for treating angina, patients at high risk for heart attack, chronic bronchitis, Alzheimer’s, and   most commonly used in the ER for the treatment of Tylenol overdose and sometimes excess alcohol. (http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-1018-N-ACETYL%20CYSTEINE.aspx?activeIngredientId=1018&activeIngredientName=N-ACETYL%20CYSTEINE).  For dermatology, it grows hair and nails.

4. Thicken each hair to increase volume by using LOTS of mousse.  Works for men too.  If you normally use 1 handful of mousse use 4-6 handfuls.  Not all at once of course.  Comb to distribute in between applications, so apply a few handfuls to wet hair, comb thoroughly, apply some more, comb again, apply some more, then comb and blow dry.  I like Vavoom Matrix (my personal favorite) or Redkin.  I also use L’Oreal Ever Style- Volume Root Lifting Spray (Alcohol Free) on my roots for lift.   When you wash your hair, shampoo 2-3 times with a hydrating shampoo like Pureology Hydrating shampoo (purple bottles) to remove product that may build up.

Other medical causes of hair loss should also be examined such as medications, thyroid, Vegan diet (N-Aceytl Cysteine deficiency), too much testosterone supplementation, lack of estrogen, autoimmune disorders, and many others.
